Alexander Avenue / Golden Gate Bridge View Vista Point

The interchange at Alexander Avenue and the Golden Gate Bridge View Vista Point is in Marin County. This is a popular destination for locals and tourists because of its proximity to Marin Headlands and Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point. TAM’s study found several features at the interchange could be improved, such as subpar pavement conditions, bike lane upgrades, fthe connection from Vista Point to Alexander Avenue, and underpass roadway widths. These and other limitations are described in the Existing Conditions, Constraints, and Opportunities Report below.

Interchange Improvements

TAM proposes several improvements for the interchange to make it easier and safer to access Highway 101 and improve the flow of traffic. Proposed projects include restriping and widening the freeway. To gain an important understanding of the interchange area, the study examined the following:

  • Existing Infrastructure
  • Transit Routes and Intermodal Connectivity
  • Weekday AM & PM Peak Period Congestion
  • Crash Type and Severity
  • Environmental Constraints

Many of the study’s recommended changes will make the interchange easier to use for drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, and people using public transit. The proposals will also increase safety at the interchanges and on surrounding streets and pathways, allowing for smoother travel to, from, and across Highway 101 and local roads.

The near-term improvement concept focuses on making the interchange safer and easier get around for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians The roadway will be restriped to allow drivers to better merge onto the southbound on-ramp from Alexander Avenue. Other improvements include creating an auxiliary lane for the northbound US 101 on-ramp, constructing a roundabout to improve vehicular traffic circulation through the intersection, and widening an existing multi-use path between Vista Point and Alexander Avenue.

The long-term concept builds on the near-term improvements and proposes a roundabout at the intersection of Alexander Avenue, creating one lane at the northbound off-ramp. The existing multi-use path along US 101 will be widened to 18 feet to connect users to Vista Point and Alexander Avenue. Users will also be connected to a future path at Vista Point that will lead to Conzelman Road on the west side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Public and Agency Input

Between March and April 2021, TAM surveyed residents of Marin to collect input about the 12 selected interchanges. More than 2,750 people responded to the survey. The survey was launched to gather the public’s thoughts and priorities on improvements to the interchange. TAM has incorporated the feedback we received to ensure the project reflects community values and preferences.

In the survey, 132 people commented on Alexander Avenue/Vista Point. Residents rated the level of importance for eight potential improvements on a 5-point scale ranging from not important to most important. The interchange report includes a summary of the survey results and comments received.

" This is the most dangerous on-ramp in Marin! The ramp is way too short with very poor visibility combined with the juxtaposition of the bridge and tunnel—it is a recipe for disaster. These issues are amplified at night due to poor lighting. "
